This one was a little disturbing to me for some reason. Maybe it was Jack's face, more creepy than funny? There was a lot going on in this one. Maybe a little too much for Early Readers to keep up with.
I agree with Clare. I wanted to like this book, in fact I did like the layout, the large frames that flow directly across the open pages are very easy to follow. But the illustrations and the dialogue just didn't grab me.
Hmmm...
While I am not a fan of clown-looking toys that talk and move on their own, I do think the book's format is the easiest of the early reader graphic novels to follow.
I also like that the story is reminiscent of Little Cat B, etc. from The Cat in the Hat Comes Back. Beyond that connection, it was a little too light on story.
I love that book, and think it's far more sophisticated than it seems. I discovered it with a 6-year old who has been totally fascinated by it. I think part of the kid's attraction has to do with the rather powerful story, which he then mastered by reading again and again, so the characters very much came to life for him. A magical book, truly meant for a young child. Anyone who's dubious should read it with an emerging reader.
