What a great beginning reader! Cynthia Rylant is so talented at taking a short simple story, and making it appealing! Her language flows naturally, yet is simple enough for a beginning reader. I love the characters, I love the storyline, there's a great page-turning dynamic, and the illustrations are detailed and expressive.

If I were training for a race, it probably would look like this. From page 14,

Zeke kept running by with his jump rope,
Mr. Putter kept touching his knees,
and Tabby had lots of tea.

Things were going great.

Cynthia Rylant combines words so well. I am always impressed and inspired.

But...

I was bothered by the falling down senior citizens who "never got up." If that bugs me as an adult, from what I remember of myself as a child, I would worry about those poor people.

I like the fact that the older people aren't portrayed as past their time and boring, the way some kids percieve them. It's a nice change of perspective.

I loved this story. Mr.Putter is such a lovable character and his friend Mrs. Teaberry adds a lot of her own spunk to the book as well.

This would be a great book for discussing characters or discussing word choice or voice in your students writing.

What a simple yet fun story for beginning readers! It's divided into chapters so that beginning readers can feel that they too have advanced to chapter books. What could be more funny than to see two seniors running?
Yes, I would use this book in a reading group or during whole group instruction. I could use it to teach the vocabulary words of senior, marathon, and training because they repeat.
