It turns out my daughter's 1st grade teacher is starting off the year with the topic of planets/space/rocketships etc. which made this book very appealing to her. Plenty of repetition of unfamiliar words, an interesting story. One of the chapters was much longer than the others though and we like to stop at chapter breaks and that led to a lot of "how many more pages" issues.
Interesting about the chapter length...otherwise a solid contender, I'd say. The illustrations provide good clues to the text, and the topic is one that would appeal to kids.
