I love Jan Thomas books. They are so simple, but hilarious at the same time. I thought "The Doghouse" was a good pick, but in order to get some of the subtle jokes at the end you must read "A Birthday for Cow". I actually think that "A Birthday for Cow" should be added to the list. I think I enjoyed it more than "The Doghouse", but don't get me wrong I still really like "The Doghouse" too.
I think you are right, I read them out of order and I wish I would have read this one first. The thing I love most about easy readers is the fact that the pictures help tell the story so well! The expressions on the characters' faces are so perfect for this one! What a fun book.
