And the Winner Is....

On Sunday, December 4th, the Allen County Public Library hosted a Mock Geisel Election for Families. After counting over 50 votes, we arrived at our Mock Geisel 2012 winner as well as three Honor Books. The winner is -- Drum Roll, please --

Fly guy Vs. the Flyswatter! by Tedd Arnold
Summary: A hilarious new Fly Guy adventure -- when Fly Guy joins Buzz's class on a trip to a flyswatter factory, it's the "best field trip ever!" When Fly Guy goes to school with Buzz, they learn that his class is taking a field trip to a flyswatter factory! BAD NEWZZ! Fly Guy tries to hide in Buzz's pocket, but when the tour guide starts insulting flies, Buzz cannot help but stick his head out. A robotic flyswatter named the Super Swatter detects Fly Guy, and Fly Guy causes a hilarious ruckus in his efforts to escape. At the end of this zany adventure, the flyswatter factory announces an end to its factory tours and the students use their free flyswatters as art to celebrate the "best field trip ever!"

Mock Geisel Election for Families

Families are invited to visit Children's Services at the Main Library between NOW and December 4. Help us choose the "best" early reader for children in our MONTH LONG Mock Geisel Election. Books on the reading list below are available for viewing. Everyone -- adults and children alike -- may fill out a ballot and vote for their favorite new early reader, one vote per day per person, please.

On Sunday, December 4, from 2:00-3:00 p.m. we'll be holding our Mock Geisel for Families program. Come and learn about the Geisel Award and take part in the last vote before our Mock Winner is announced. We'll also have refreshments and book give-aways. We hope you'll join us!

As you prepare for the ACPL Mock Geisel Discussion and Election on Saturday, January 16th from 2 to 6pm, I encourage you to keep the following Geisel Award criteria in mind:

From the ALSC website:

The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award recognizes the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished beginning reader of the year.
The text of the book must be geared towards children preschool through 2nd grade.
Illustrations must function as clues to the text & demonstrate the story being told.
Subject matter must motivate the child to read.
New words should be added slowly enough to make learning them a positive experience.
Words should be repeated to ensure retention.
Sentences must be simple and straightforward.
The book creates a successful reading experience.
The plot advances from one page to the next, creating a "page turning" dynamic.

We have a wide variety of books on the table, so this is sure to be an exciting discussion.

Over the past year, our Mock Geisel committee enjoyed reading books from a suggested reading list of 43 titles. Today, we gathered for an afternoon of exciting discussion about sentence structure, theme, vocabulary, illustrations, text spacing, plot pacing and more! In the end, we agreed that 2008 was a wonderful year for beginning readers!

We selected one title as our 2009 Mock Geisel Winner and one title as an Honor book.
